I mentioned before that Minecraft is largely the experience you shape within it and today something ridiculously awesome and completely organic happened to me that I want to talk about because it just goes to show how fantastic non-linear games can be if you give them the opportunity
So you can make an enchantment table to cast spells on your tools and weapons to make them more effective and if you surround the table with bookshelves, these little glyphs fly off and into the spellbook and it increases how powerful the spells are
The problem lies within the fact that bookshelves are kind of a pain to create because there’s a lot of resources that go into making them
Anyway, today I was exploring and I stumbled upon a cavern than went really deep beneath the earth and down there I discovered a stronghold - if you’re not familiar with what that is, it’s a naturally occurring and randomly generated sort of dungeon where you can find treasure, traps, ridiculously annoying and aggressive enemies and, should you choose to collect the resources to activate it, a portal to the game’s only scripted ending
This particular stronghold had an ancient cobweb-filled library and I decided to steal all the books from it to save me time building my spell room at home but something seemed kind of ill-advised about this and sure enough I accidentally hit an enemy called a silverfish and instantly a swarm of them descended upon me and I barely made it the fuck out of the stronghold and immediately after that, within the caverns, zombies started chasing me too
It was like they all somehow knew I’d defiled this stupid underground library and making it out alive and building my spell room felt so much more satisfying as a result
It was all unscripted but it felt so immersive. What a neat game
